Frequently Asked Questions
What is silicone render?
Silicone or thin coat render is the most versatile and advanced render on the market. With base coats ranging from 6-10mm thickness and fully meshed they provide an extremely strong and lightweight render system suitable for all types of properties be it brick or timber frame. Highly water and dirt resistant top coat makes it strong and low maintenance for years to come. With hundreds of colours to choose from and a range of grain sizes, we guarantee to have something for everyone.
What is EWI?
EWI (External wall insulation) is a process where polystyrene boards are attached to the property prior to rendering. This is especially useful on older properties with solid walls. Available in various sizes from 50mm to 180mm we can insulate your home and bring down your heating bills and help resolve damp issues.
How long does the render process take?
Every house varies dependent on size and the prep work involved but we usually aim to complete a 3 bed semi detached property in around a week.
Can you render over existing render?
Yes! Silicone/thin coat renders are suitable to go over existing renders providing they are solid, The systems are lightweight and highly flexible, This saves you time and money as hacking off existing solid renders can be an expensive and messy process.
What is the difference between silicone and monocouche?
•Silicone is waterproof so it tends to stay a lot cleaner for longer where as mono is porous sucks in the water and in turn the dirt so can discolour within a few years. Also with the top coat being paint based the colours are a lot brighter with a lot more choice.
•Silicone is highly flexible and very rarely cracks even years down the line, whereas the mono although, a lot less likely to crack than traditional sand and cement does crack a lot more frequently than Silicone.
•Silicone is lightweight meaning it can go over a lot more substrates with less prep therefore saving time and money. (Although generally you will pay a bit more for silicone than mono you’re definitely getting a better product)
•Silicone can go over insulation (EWI) which keeps your property warmer and brings down your heating bills. It can also be used over a render carrier board/cement board so if you’re having a timber frame property or extension built silicone is definitely the way to go.
•Lastly, maintenance. Should you get fancy a colour change to your property or your render is looking tired you can always pressure wash silicone (you cannot with mono) or paint it a different colour. Mono can also be painted but with its pitted finish the paint does fill the texture slightly which in some cases detracts from the finish. Silicone is the the lowest maintenance render on the market and should you keep on top of the maintainable it does need it’ll last for years.
You should always research your systems and renders before committing to have your house done. Some are cheap for a reason and there are a lot of people who don’t understand the products that claim they do. Always go for someone that is trustworthy and has plenty of jobs you can see in person before committing.
